Creative variety: what Meta really means for restaurant ads

What does Meta mean by creative variety?

For Meta, creative variety means giving the algorithm truly different options to test: different formats (image, short video, longer video, carousel, Stories), different angles (the dish alone or people eating, reviews or offers) and copy with different logic. Changing only the button color does not count. More distinct concepts raise the chance that one performs well and lowers cost.

When Meta talks about "broad creative variety", it is not asking you to post more often. It is asking you to give the algorithm enough raw material to test, because the system can only find the winning combination among the options you actually give it.

Different formats

Changing the background color inside the same format is not enough. The recommendation is to combine truly different content types:

  • Static image
  • Short video (under 15 seconds)
  • Longer video (30 to 60 seconds)
  • Carousel
  • Vertical Stories (9:16)

Each format holds attention in a different way, and different placements (Feed, Stories, Reels) favor different formats. Variety here raises the chance that each creative lands where it fits best.

Different creative angles

Varied formats with the same selling argument is still little variety. What changes the game is varying the approach:

  • The dish on its own vs. people enjoying it
  • Customer review vs. brand story
  • Direct offer vs. behind-the-scenes in the kitchen
  • User-generated content vs. professional food photography

Each of these pairs speaks to a person at a different moment of the decision. Someone who already knows your restaurant reacts to a review; someone who has never heard of you first needs to see what you serve.

Three versions of the same idea, a different button color or photo angle, are not variety. They are the same bet, made three times.

Different copy

Copy also needs to vary in logic, not just in words:

  • Benefit headline vs. social proof headline
  • Short copy vs. long copy
  • Problem angle ("nothing to cook tonight?") vs. solution angle

Why this lowers cost

Variety connects directly to how Meta’s auction works: the more genuinely different options an ad set has, the higher the chance that at least one of them scores well on the relevance diagnostics, which lowers the delivery cost of that creative. Forcing a whole audience to react to one concept is betting everything on one card.

The most common mistake is not lack of effort. It is confusing variation with variety. Changing a button color or rewriting the same sentence three ways gives the system nothing new to test. What works is creating concepts that are fundamentally different from each other, even when they sell the same dish.

Frequently asked questions

How different they are matters more than how many. Three versions of the same idea count as one; what helps the system are fundamentally different concepts.
