Why we no longer rely on interest targeting for restaurant ads

Is interest targeting still worth it for restaurant ads on Meta?

Interest targeting still exists, but it is no longer the center of the strategy. With Advantage+ Audience, on by default, Meta treats interests as suggestions and looks beyond them when it predicts better results, while keeping hard limits like your delivery area. Today the biggest targeting advantage is a well-configured Pixel and Conversions API showing the system who actually orders.

For years, setting up a Meta campaign started with one question: "which interests do I pick?". The person running ads chose a list of interests, behaviors and demographics and hoped it described who actually orders. That still exists, but it is no longer the center of the strategy, and that is no accident: Meta redesigned the system to work differently.

What changed: Advantage+ Audience

Today, when you define an audience, Meta applies Advantage+ Audience by default. According to the official documentation, it expands the eligible audience the delivery system can reach, while respecting non-negotiable constraints such as location, minimum age and custom audience exclusions.

In practice, you can still suggest interests, custom audiences and lookalikes as signals, but the system prioritizes those signals and, when it predicts a better or cheaper result, goes beyond them. For a restaurant, the location constraint (your delivery radius) stays firm; who inside that radius sees the ad is increasingly decided by the system.

That changes the job of whoever manages the account. The question stops being "which interest do I choose" and becomes "which signal do I give the system", and that is where the central piece comes in.

A hand-picked interest describes who someone says they are. An order tracked by the Pixel shows who they really are.

Why the Pixel became the real advantage

An interest is a broad, declared category: "interested in food", "interested in pizza". A well-configured Pixel event is the opposite: the record of a real action by someone who viewed your menu, added a dish to the cart or placed an order. That data describes real ordering behavior, not a generic label assigned by the platform.

When the Pixel (and the Conversions API) send clean, complete signals, Advantage+ Audience has far better information to work with, and targeting stops depending on the intuition of whoever builds the campaign. When the Pixel is misconfigured or losing data, the system literally sees less of what happened after the click, and targeting is limited by the quality of the information it receives.

What this means in practice

Targeting today is less about "choosing the right interests" and more about making sure of three things: conversion events set up correctly, data flowing through the Pixel and the Conversions API together, and audience signals used as direction, not as a fence. That is why, before talking about creative or budget, the first question we ask a new restaurant is about the health of its tracking.

Frequently asked questions

It is Meta’s feature that expands the audience the system can reach, respecting only constraints such as location, minimum age and exclusions. Interests and audiences you provide become signals, not limits.

Yes. Location is one of the constraints Advantage+ Audience respects, so ads stay inside the area you define.
